Western Mines strikes Mulga Tank nickel system
Western Mines Group (ASX:WMG) has struck an ‘extensive’ nickel sulphide mineral system in Exploration Incentive Scheme (EIS) deep hole MTD026 at its Mulga Tank Project in Western Australia.
The $31.48 million market capitalisation company says geochemical assays from hole MTD026 highlight cumulative disseminated nickel sulphide mineralisation of 840m @ 0.28% nickel (Ni), 140 parts per million (ppm) cobalt (Co), 103ppm copper (Cu), and 24 parts per billion (ppb) platinum+palladium (Pt+Pd) with a sulphur:nickel ratio (S:Ni) of 1.6.
The magmatic nickel sulphide mineral system discovered throughout the hole has elevated nickel and sulphur coincident with ‘highly anomalous’ copper, platinum group elements (PGE), and observed disseminated sulphides.
Western Mines reports ‘significant’ mineralised intersections from hole MTD026 include 130m @ 0.31% Ni, 136ppm Co, 122ppm Cu, and 24ppb Pt+Pd from 116m, including 13m @ 0.35% Ni, 142ppm Co, 301ppm Cu, and 65ppb Pt+Pd from 157m.
Commenting on the assays, Western Mines Group Managing Director Caedmon Marriott says: “MTD026 was our second EIS deep hole at Mulga Tank and certainly surpasses hole MTD023. We have discovered a huge working nickel sulphide mineral system within the Mulga Tank ultramafic complex.

These assay results confirm the visual observations and clearly show over 800m of disseminated nickel sulphide mineralisation. The system has a large footprint across the complex and could host globally significant tonnes of Mt-Keith-style mineralisation — even in just the top couple of hundred metres.”
In addition, Western Mines Group Technical Director Dr Ben Grguric says: “Drilling at the Mulga Tank Project continues to show broad intersections of disseminated sulphide together with scattered intersections of high-grade remobilised nickel sulphide.
These are clearly hallmarks of a very significant mineralised system. The host rock, being continuous intersections of hundreds of metres of adcumulate dunite, is indicative of a very large, very hot, and energetic magmatic system, and this augurs extremely well for the prospectivity of the project.”

The company plans to continue adding drillholes to the current diamond drill program at the project as it progresses its ongoing targeting work.
Western Mines Group is a mineral exploration company focused on exploring and discovering ‘high-value’ gold and nickel sulphide deposits across a portfolio of ‘highly prospective’ projects located on ‘major’ mineral belts of Western Australia.
As of 30 June 2023, the company had $3.272 million cash and cash equivalents at hand, according to its latest quarterly report.
