Blaster Supervisor
Requirements:
- Education level: Diploma in mining with minimum 3 years experience as shotfirer, or Senior high school with minimum 7 years experience as shotfirer.
- Have an experience working in an explosive company
- Good communication skills.
- Must be the holder of a General Driving License, “A” Driving License.
- Certificate of KJL 2 is must.
- Hold KIM is a must.
- Hold valid POP certification.
- Technical knowledge (blast design, bulk explosive product and blast accessories)
- Computer literate.
- Have a good understanding of explosives products and initiating systems including non-electric and electronic systems
Responsibilities:
- The responsibilities listed in this section apply to the incumbent who is the accountable person for these activities however he/she may physically be required to carry out these tasks or he/she may also supervise these tasks being carried out within his/her area of responsibility. The incumbent remains accountable either way.
- Work safely and responsibly in all tasks, perform a Take 5 risk assessment when performing any new or abnormal task, and ensure that all work colleagues are not exposed to any unsafe act or condition.
- Learn and know all site procedures and standards related to all explosives/charging/blasting activities on the site that he is employed at.
- Prepare blast site for blasting activities as per site procedures and standards.
- Periodically may be required to act as location keeper if there are more than one blast locations. The “Blaster 4” may be appointed as a “Blaster on duty” on more than one location (As per site specific procedure).
- Obtain and understand the blast plan per blast location that indicates the blast design and tie up.
- Conduct a risk assessment on every blast location assigned to him/her and identify risk associated with on bench activities.
- Report and give consultative advice to client or supervisor to treat anomalies in accordance with specified requirements (e.g.: hot holes).
- Record all deviations between the actual on bench blast design compared to the planned blast design on the blast plan and report any blast design deviations to the supervisor/customer.
- The incumbent may be required to self asses and change the blast design due to variations identified in 3.4.6. These changes must be signed off by the customer/supervisor.
- Inspect and make sure tools, material and equipment required in the PLTS/DTH/ROG activities are in good working order and fit for purpose.
- Supervise site clean-up operations.
- Sign in and isolating blast area in accordance with procedures and blast plan
- Ensure the correct storing and transporting of explosives and accessories in accordance with site procedures/standards and applicable legislation within the areas assigned to him/her.
- Identify and calculate the amount of explosives and accessories to be used per blast location and communicate the information to the relevant personnel who are responsible for delivering the explosives and accessories to the blast location.
- Supervise Accessories placement, handling and application within the blast area in accordance with procedures and applicable legislation.
- Carry out priming activities in accordance with procedures and applicable legislation
- Conduct PJO and/or assessment of quality of priming activity on the blast location.
- Supervise bulk explosives charging activities and ensure that charging is done in accordance with site procedures/standards and applicable legislation
- Supervise stemming activities to ensure compliance with site procedures/standards and applicable legislation.
- Carry out blast Tie Up Activities as per the blast design and must have be capable of correcting the blast tie up design if the actual blast hole positions deviate from the planned blast design.
- Conduct a final on bench Inspection of the blast area to ensure all activities have been correctly carried out according to standard.
- Prepare the blast for initiation. (Using Nonel/electronic/electric initiating systems)
- Ensure that a blast is safe to initiate and carry our blast initiation as per site procedures and applicable legislation.
- Conduct a thorough inspection at all blasted locations under his/her responsibility to identify any potential risks or explosives that have failed to detonate as required in the post blast check.
- Treat misfires according to site procedures and applicable legislation
- Prepare and complete all daily blast reports.
- Drive LV and transport personnel on site as per site standards and rules.
- Support and assist with any abnormal site activity should this become necessary in any emergency situation.
- Required to tie up a blast with non-electric and electronic initiating systems.
