The Mogalakwena open-pit platinum mine in South Africa is a challenging operation. Extremely difficult digging conditions were taking their toll on the fleet of Cat 6060 and 6090 hydraulic shovels, until a partnership with Cat dealer Barloworld began to turn things around. Working together, the dealer and the mine improved maintenance planning and implemented a condition monitoring program, reducing unplanned maintenance from 80 percent to 20 percent, improving the availability and performance of the fleet, and saving the site millions of dollars.
